Talisker 2013 Distillers Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky

I must admit I've been quietly excited for this whisky. The Distillers Edition is a range launched by six of the big distilleries. The casks are selected by the master distiller. The Talisker Distillers Edition is double matured in ex-Amoroso Sherry casks. The bottle code is TD-S: 5PB, distilled in 2002 and bottled in 2013 making this edition 11 years old. This is a pleasant surprise as Talisker don't place an age statement on many of their whiskies.

The colour is similar to that of Ledaig which matches with the similar age and location of Ledaig and the Tobermory distillery (the Isle of Skye is less than 50km north of the Isle of Mull).

The nose is sharp and well focused with sultana sweetness, seaweed, light peat, gingerbread, grapefruit zest and iodine with  tantalizing notes of she rry.

The palate has sweet, fruity flavors, along with touches of sea salt, peat and vanilla that ultimately fade into a lingering, elegant finish.

The finish displays deep cocoa notes, magnificent vanilla and lingering earthy peat and is  enormously chewable.

So, we've had the Gaelic lesson with Bruichladdich, Highland Park, Laphroaig and anCnoc; the Scotch lesson with Cameron Brig and now the geography lesson with Talisker.

On the rugged and weather-beaten west coast of Scotland lies a 300km stretch of water which contains the isles of Islay, Jura, Mull and Skye - all home to great whiskies.
